Humpback whale washed up near Strandfontein

A 14-meter Humpback whale has washed ashore on the beach along Baden Powell Road near Strandfontein. Read more below:

The City can confirm that the whale washed ashore on Saturday afternoon, 10 October 2020. The whale appears to have been dead for a few days. The cause of death is not known.

The City is in the process of removing the whale this morning, 11 October 2020. Due to its size, it is quite a big undertaking and will require special machinery. The City’s Water and Waste Department will remove the whale and take it to Vissershok landfill site as per the City’s whale removal policy.

‘I want to warn members of the public not to interfere with the animal in any way, it is illegal to touch or remove any part of it. We urge motorists not to stop their cars in the middle of the road to look at the whale as it causes traffic congestion and may cause an accident’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Spatial Planning and Environment, Alderman Marian Nieuwoudt.
